FM (frequency modulation) radio has been around a long time. During the late fifties and through the sixties it was known for low even voiced DJs spinning mostly tunes from the 1930s and 40s for adult audiences. Therefore, we may say that FM began as Oldies stations. By the early seventies Pop and Rock stations had sprung up broadcasting in FM, eventually FM Stereo, and the established Top 40 AM (amplitude modulation)stations had to consider the purchase of new equipment and a myriad other things, which most decided against. So, the demise of Top 40 radio wasn't because it wasn't good. It was rather that technology and economics were against it at the same time and so stations began shutting down litlle by little all the up into the eighties when most had disappeared. There are many cities today, where, the entire AM spectrum is open... nothing but static can be heard, and that static is coming from your own radio. AM Stereo is with us now, and the AM stations still out there, I'm sure, will eventually adopt that broadcast format. Here's a thumbs up to the AM stations still with us, and to those that will come. |
