'The Snake' was a big record in some markets, not played much in others. Remember, that was the way it was back then. You had promotion men for all of the labels who would tirelessly call on Top 40 stations in the big cities. These guys would audition their new 'out of the box' singles for PD's. If a major station went on the song (added it to the on-air playlist), smaller stations would also add it. If medium market stations played it, it would maybe or maybe not get picked up by a major station. One big example is 'Cherry Hill Park' by Billy Joe Royal. That song was top 10 or top 5 in many areas but they never knew it in New York because WABC never played the thing. Not sure if other stations in the Apple played the song, but since WABC was the big Top 40 sound in the fall of '69, station PD Rick Sklar's decision not to add the tune was obviously a major detriment to sales and national chart position....only reaching #15 on Billboard. 'The Snake' is a great record nevertheless.
