Both of you fellows are right on target with your assessments. Larry brings up a good point regarding the 'Morning Show' gossip/lifestyle emphasis. What the corporate guys fail to see, is that the simplest way is the best way. If 'oldies' is the draw, then as a jock on the station just play the hits and weave yourself into the presentation. The rest will take care of itself and by facilitating a balanced, informative-laden show...the listener gets not only balance...but consistency. The balanced, consistent product day in and day out will grow your core and add fringe...and that's how you get dem big ratings, old buddy boy. It's interesting how the above stated technique worked for so many years, allowing stations that did it right to capture the market...but now when it is explained to PD's of todays oldies formats (who by the way, don't really know oldies 'cause they're research crunchers), they sadly do not have a clue as to what you're talking about.
