This explains why all of Jim's examples were either in the 1950's or early 1690's. I have to admit that I had not heard of many of the versions of the many examples that he gave, probably for the reason stated that although they all charted, most were either regional or not in this country.
Another one I just thought of was Del Shannon's own composition and recording of I Go To Pieces, which charted, but not that high here, but was a huge hit for Peter & Gordon around the same time.
