Not so - I just picked them at random, but there are lots of examples from the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's.

In fact, there are over 400 examples of doubles (two songs charting nationally, siultaneously - I just could not list them all).

Secondly, all charted in the USA nationally - they were not regional breakouts and they were not oveseas entries.

Thirdly, there are lots of examples from the 1970's and later but as I mentioned to John, the reason they happened in the earlier years in greater numbers, was the "compulsory licence" regulations.
