Well John, it makes about as much sense as anything I've ever heard about the Kinks - and the joke is, you could be right.

Incidentally, although I know you are not always too impressed by the oldies as they often appear today, you might like to know rhat the Kinks are right now rehearsing in London for both a recording and a tour.

And on another matter - do you remember I was talking away endlessly about oldies acts still playing live dates in the USA?

Well, I left the biggest one out, it seems.

I was chatting to one of the US booking agents last week, and he said rhat the oldies act with the most solid booking sheet of all right now is - (wait for it) - Jay & The Americans!

Have no idea what the lineup is - but seemingly they are in constant demand.

I'm not even sure which "Jay" is involved - is it Jay Traynor or Jay Black?

Anyway, I liked them a lot.

Now you collect weird stuff, but two tracks I always wanted to lay hands on were Jay & The Americans "Cara Mia", with Jay holding the note for 60 seconds (put together by some DJ and a lot of splicing tape, but apparently played on lots of other stations), and Elvis duetting with (was it Linda Ronstadt?) on "Love Me Tender", put together by another DJ who managed to synchronise two totally different versions to create a duet.

Did either of those ever see the light of day commercially? Or even on bootlegs?

I think I ought to get a life.
