After listening to the Stereo version, I begin to question things. A trip across the internet answers some suspicions I have to (jokingly) compile this...

And they wonder why The early Kinks tunes are only available in Monophonic.....

One Sunny Afternoon, In The Summertime, Ray says, okay guys, we're going to record this song called "Sunny Afternoon", but the music isn't quite final yet, so let's just do our part. Ray also says, oh, and we'll record any vocals later on, since I can't play and sing at the same time! You don't want me to have another nervous breakdown, do you?!! Get me a fan, will you someone, it's hot in here! Ray isn't quite satisfied with what The Kinks accomplished, the song needs more working! So, he begins to think, what sessionman would work best? He finally calls in Nicky Hopkins to overdub piano to what they previously recorded. Ray is hoping Nicky doesn't want an arm and leg for pay! Ray is now happy, but still isn't quite sure what to do with the vocals. The song needs a "sweet" touch, but none of The Kinks are very good singers. He thinks and thinks, I could hire another, but knowing I'll be issuing a "Low Budget" LP sometime in the distant future, he asks his wife, Rasa, to help sing sweet harmony! After it was finalized, they had so many overdubs, they said screw it, we'll just release it in Monophonic!!! :-)

Best,
John
