You are right - Duane Eddy's theme never appeared in the TV series, but he was obviously a huge fan of the show, having called his first album released in January 1959 "Have Twangy Guitar - Will Travel"! The show however already had an instrumental theme, totally different from the song itself. That instrumental was played at the start, and had been written and recorded by Bernard Herrmann - the man who wrote the music for lots of Hitchcock movies, as well as the Jodie Foster movie "Taxi" etc. A year before he recorded his version of the "Have Gun Will Travel" theme, Duane Eddy also recorded (and charted) an instrumental version of the theme song from "Because They're Young" which had been been sung in the film by James Darren, and had been written originally as an instrumental by Don Costa, with lyrics by Aaron Schroeder and Wally Gold. However, in 1961, there were plans to make a movie version of "Have Gun Will Travel", but as the populaity of the show declined, these plans were shelved. By then however, Duane Eddy had recorded his version of that theme also. |
