Everybody is right!

This is Duane Eddy's instrumental version of a song written by Johnny Western, Richard Boone, and Sam Rolfe in 1957, for the series "Have Gun Will Travel". The series used the vocal version, sung by Johnny Western, the first lines of which were something like

"Have Gun Will Travel - reads the card of a man
A knight without armor in a savage land:
His fast gun for hire head's the calling wind
A soldier of fortune is the man called Paladin"

or something like that!

Faron Young recorded it also but neither Johnny Western or Faron Young charted with it.

It was left to Duane Eddy years later (in 1962), to do this.

Western went on to star in lots of cowboy films, and wrote songs for "Bonanza". He now does a country music show on KFTI, AM 1070, in Wichita, Kansas.

If you remember the ending of the film "Stand By Me", - the theme all of the characters sing is "The Ballad Of Paladin".
