Subject: RE: Royalties - for web radio (Attn: Bob)

Message Detail:
Good thread Jersey John, and I'd like to weigh in with a few comments.

My view on this is simple. It is not the singers who make money of off royalties...it is the WRITERS. Very important point.

For years, who has made royalties off many of the Beatles hits? Michael Jackson! That's right. Jackson gets 50% of licensing and publishing fees. Lennon's estate and Paul McCartney get the other half.

Jackson bought the company (Northern Songs) that owned those Beatles song rights a few years back.

Now...take a site like Ultimate Oldies Radio. More than 60% of our playlist involves songs that are not played any more on commercial radio. Folks forget about songs, and even if they haven't...they don't remember the names. I get a fair amount of emails asking for the name of this song or that song.

Thus...if I am playing Horst Jankowski, Reparata & the Delrons, or Don Ralke's '77 Sunset Strip'...I'm exposing songs that commercial radio has ignored for decades. Even the nationally syndicated shows. Which means that just maybe a few more sales of those tunes (and royalties) can go to the writer if someone finds the song interesting by hearing it here and goes to another website to BUY it.

Now...we have items in the store which involve recorded material. I have a Bobby Rydell interview and an Elvis tribute. A couple of other features are there too. Mr. Rydell knows about our site, and maybe the BMG folks with Elvis do as well. There hasn't been concern expressed with what we are doing, because they to whatever degree benefit more from their product exposed and popularized here in comparison to whatever humble monies we pull in off a donation.

If on the other hand...I were to start packaging an Ultimate Oldies Radio 'Greatest Hits' collection whereby I master songs and market them for profit...then I think I'd be hearing from some attorneys...and rightfully so.

It's a subject that because of its controversial nature has many opinions.

Perhaps the one site regular who is qualified because of his success as a performer AND a recording artist will weigh in on this.

That being our good friend Jimmy Dee.

Thanks,

Bob
