But my point was the erroneous thought of "modern" (International, Continental) Morse instead of American, perpetuating the misconception that modern Morse was used here during "our" war of the 1860s. (An example of what is posted can be found under Civil War telegraph, which is, I infer, a commendable effort by two young people, that depicts "modern" Morse as the system. By contrast, the website on telegraph and J.H. Bunnell makes it clear that "L" in Lincoln's time was a long dash, not some dots and dashes.) Any lightning-grabber or flag-flopper should feel obliged to correct the error whenever encountered, and at least try to educate and curb the misapprehension.
