Walt, The familiar Washington D.C. Winder Bldg sig sta photo shows the flag-man holding an exceptionally longer and thicker pole than the field kit. I reckon he's holding a six-footer from a pole larger than the tapered 12-16 feet standard Mark has discussed. If so, he must have been a real man! On the other hand, aside from lectures and static displays, the distances involved in reenactments wouldn't seem to raquire a six-footer flag like the central sig sta in D.C. Which is to say, the clarity of the ferrule may actually be misleading, if it was an exceptional case, We still need to verify first generation US signal corps supply, but this thread is a good, solid account for now. (Has anyone found an actual 1860s wartime field kit pole in museum or private hands?) As to Confederate ... .
