Message Detail:
August 16, 1858: President James Buchanan inaugurates the new transatlantic telegraph cable by exchanging greetings with Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. However, a weak signal forces a shutdown of the service in a few weeks.

As an added note, Harper's Ferry National Historic Park has a three to four inch section of the original transatlantic cable in their collection. They display it on occasion as an example of the rise in industry and technology in the US (Harper's Ferry being an industrial town in the period).
