Subject: RE: The Beardslee Machine

Message Detail:
A word search of Scheips for “Beardslee” yields 75 hits, probably 60% of which appear in footnotes. Nonetheless, a fairly extensive discussion may be found. Insofar as what you’re aiming at, the following are probably the most apropos:

“[T]he Beardslee's real military value at Frederickspurg and in other engagements, as something apart from its historical significance, still awaits operational studies that might give it, the Military Telegraph, and visual communications careful consideration.”

“Generally speaking [the Beardslee machines] have received short shrift except at the hands of the Signal Corps officers actually responsible for them, although it appears that nobody has ever taken the trouble to study the operational reports of those officers in the context of the operations themselves.”

There are a few technical bits which allude to your immediate questions, but provide no definitive answers. If you don't have access to Scheips, contact me off line.
