Subject: RE: Benj. Fisher's Libby Prison Escape

Message Detail:
Walt, thanks for the info about Carlisle and the other sources. A member of another online site has since passed along a number of the Carlisle papers which have been posted online. Haven't had a chance to open them as yet. Hopefully they will contain some reference to the escape. Regarding Fisher's capture, Mosby relates in his memoirs that it occurred at night at a house where Fisher and another officer on Hooker's staff had stopped for a meal while on route to cavalry chief Pleasonton with valuable dispatches. Obviously this pause for dinner was not a prudent move on their part. Turns out that Mosby rushed these dispatches immediately to Stuart, who in turn sent them post haste to Lee who was awaiting info about the location and movements of the Union army at his HQ in the Valley. This was the first intel he had received, and it turned out to be a windfall.
