Subject: ID'g Wartime Signal Stations in Virginia
Welcome to our 1860's signal/telegraph/balloon research and living history site. As you may have noticed, we cover a lot of aspects on the site. This forum is only one part of it.
While your question is a good one, a new thread would probably have been preferable to incorporating your question in a re-enactor thread speaking about the upcoming 150th anniversary observance activities.
That being said, I suppose the best place for you to begin researching the whereabouts of all of the known Federal and Confederate signal stations in Virginia might be on our roster page.
Once in the roster section, if you type in the letters Va you will begin to get hits relating to station locations.
Were you planning to identify all of the known Virginia signal stations? If so, this would add materially to identifying the actual sites so that those wishing to place roadside markers at these locations could do so.
In fact, anyone else who'd like to pinpoint signal stations in others states would do well to use the site's Union signal corps roster as a starting point. I'm sorry to say that we haven't gotten around to establishing a Confederate roster but that may come in the future ---
Again, thanks for posting up with us with such a good question.
