Subject: RE: What really happened at Antietam

Message Detail:
Note that Sears' statement is based upon the same report from Gloskoski as printed in the OR, apparently no "new" info. Gloskoski has the advantage of writing early, but deprived of records due to rain damage and loss. He was apparently not at the photographed "Elk Ridge" signal tower (which recent research claims to have been erected post-battle and farther down toward the Potomac), but at the "Mountain battle station" overlooking the battle proper [perhaps on hill 950 where Red Hill road crosses to meet Porterstown Rd below Flickersville?]. Mac's GHQ at Pry House could not "see" Burnside's sig sta or others, necessitating multiple sig stas at GHQ and placing the Mountain sta in key role both as OP and as relay between GHQ and, e.g., Burnside. Loss of Gloskoski's register of sent/rcvd makes me wonder if full picture of Union sig employment possible .. plus the problem of determining when the general actually rcvd the info and how it affected his decisions, if at all.
