Best you heard it first from a real former "lightning-grabber," Tom.

This is the modern, updated branch insignia. Think of the device at top as indicating the Army branch that "wields" the lightning -- controls and uses electricity. (Or think of it as SecWar Stanton's fist, telling Col. Myer to keep his hand off Stanton's USMT!) The post-Civil War branch colors are indicated just below.

US Army Institute of Heraldry provides the official explanation in traditional "coat of arms" language, available online.
