Subject: RE: Breaking the SC code

Message Detail:
Dave, I suppose a case can be made for the situation on July 2 at Gettysburg in which Longstreet decided to countermarch rather than expose McLaws' division to the SC observers on Little Round Top. That delay may have been detrimental to the success of the eventual attack, since during the interim the Union Sixth Corps arrived to reinforce the Union left flank. The delay also limited the time available to press the attack. Certainly E.P. Alexander credited the presence of the SC party on LRT for the lack of success of Longstreet's attack.
