I am at work and don't have "Brown's" in front of me but seem to remember the following info. It may not pertain exactly to what you are trying to determine. What I remember reading is that actual wire telegraph lines ran from Wash., DC to Point of Rocks, MD and then flag telegraphy took over from there. From South Mtn. I believe the distance is approximatlely 54 miles back to DC. I think that's the way McClellan communicated with Lincoln at least twice during the Battle of Antietam.
