Subject: RE: Signal Re-enactors' Staff College? You Never Know!
Walt, This is a very serious and evidently worthy endeavor for men in blue, engaged in the combat arms. For field and higher staff, imagine teaching recce and intel w/o ref to the role of the Signal Corps (let alone commo, at least beyond arm and hand signals). Curriculum/syllabus needs a module on the role of the signal corps (both for commo and for observation) and electromagnetic telegraphy--USMT and field telegraph. (And prob on route transposition encryption.)|
This use of Fort Washington is great! With Museum of the Confederacy anticipating moving a portion of its collection into Fort Monroe, the College might want to consider a sister site (that could also accommodate a visual signal link with Fort Wool--the Rip-raps). Maybe even a sub-marine cable to Cherrystone and into DC? Of course, since Monroe remained in Federal hands, maybe the closest thing to a Confederate counterpart would have to be a little farther south.
PS: I wonder if anyone during the 1860s knew Major Roger's instructions?
