Subject: RE: Signal Glass

Message Detail:
The marine glass/field glass/binocular was lower in magnification, but afforded greater light collection, so it would have provided better short range search, panoramic sweeping, and the like, difficult to do with a "high power" telescope, especially in dim light. For short range (beyond normal eye-ball), it might have sufficed, but it was invaluable for quickly locating another communicating sig sta, whereupon the telescope could then be trained on the other sta and perhaps fixed on a mount of some type. I suspect that the officer preferred the binocs and let his sgt carry the 'scope.
