Subject: RE: More on Gettysburg telegraph

Message Detail:
Thanks, Dave. My info on this came from Prowell's "Prelude to Gettysburg: Encounter at Hanover." Prowell says that Daniel E. Trone, the telegraph operator, threw his new instrument in a loft above his office, and left two defective ones on the table. He goes on to say that local "Copperheads" identified Trone to the Rebs, so Trone quickly left town to avoid capture. No details about whether White's 35th Battalion or Early's division had a tel op with them. By the way, I wrote an article about the Hanover battle in Issue 27 of Gettysburg Magazine called "Kilpatrick Bars Stuart's Route to Gettysburg" in which I mention this incident.
