Message Detail:
Ray, much appreciate the information. I visited the SC Museum at Ft. Gordon in '05 (wrote an article about it and the National Cryptologice Museum at Ft. Meade for the Washington Times Civil War Page), and I must have seen the Myer's telescope then, but memory is hazy. Just checked the SC Camp of Insturction manual I got hold of while at Ft. Gordon, and it includes a sketch of the telescope with a description that says it "was of about 30 power, with a focal length of 26 inches. The tube was cased in leather. The draw was of 4 joints, bronzed black in order that there might be no glitter to attract the enemy nor glare to disturb the eye of the observer. Leather caps were fitted over both eye and object glasses and the whole was supported by a storng leather strap, long enough to pass over the shoulder and connecting the caps and glass in such a way thet there were no losse parts." Exactly what you said. Forgot I had that manual in a folder. Thanks again.

Tom
