Subject: Signal Glass

Message Detail:
Have a question about a message from a civilian intel agent operating in Maryland for Hooker's Army of the Potomac during the Gettysburg Campaign. While the AoP was still in Virginia, General Hooker sent the agent John Babcock on a solo mission to find Lee's army by observing from South Mountain. Babcock sent a message back that he had sent a signal glass to a couple people he hired to carry out the job.
My question is what exactly is a signal glass. Assume it is a telescope of some sort. But can anyone be more specific about what this instrument likely was, its power, its make, etc. etc. In other words, what kind of "signal glass" was available in those days. Presumably this had been provided to Babcock by the Union Signal Corps.
Appreciate any help you can provide.
Tom Ryan
