Subject: Union Codes and Ciphers

Message Detail:
Some of you may be interested in how the USMT cipher worked. The National Security Agency has an interesting book on codes and ciphers up to the advent of radio. A chapter shows how the USMT ciphers worked. Best of all, it's free. (Your tax dollars at work.) Ask for Weber's "Masked Dispatches: Cryptograms and Cryptography in American History, 1775-1900." Write to:

The Center for Cryptologic History

Fort George G. Meade, MD 20755-6886.
