Subject: Early & Varied Signal Badges or Insignia

Hope I'm not popping buttons here but....

According to Brown's account, insignia was worn by members of Lieut. Ludwick's signal party during the winter of '61-62 on page 461. Might it have differed somewhat from that prescribed in the Summer of 1864.

If we look at flag-man Furber's cap device opposite page 444 in Brown we notice that his hat device is not in those porportions prescribed in the '64 orders for cap and sleeve devices. Additionally, see how different it looks from the device worn by signallist Campbell's opposite page 368.
