Subject: RE: Brass joint picture on Ebay

Message Detail:
We do know that some of the orders for Federal signal flags were gotten through Annin & Co of New York City but we don't know of any flag poles being obtained from the same source.

None of what I say dicounts the chance of the jointed poles being from the 'period' but I'd also tend to be suspicious of an authentic item offered with no authentification.

In the case of Annin, I should suspect that this flag company had a catalogue, such as we have found with the Jas. Queen Company of Phila., and if so the flag staffs may be listed.

Judging by the couplings in the image, the pole was intended to support a draped flag and not one that would sustain the riggors of signal duty. As Dave points out, the poles appear in the image to be a bit longer than four feet each (minus the saw'd off part). Still, its ferruling is interesting to study. Tnx Burnie for some good cyber scouting.
