|
Don't know if this press release, generated with the help of the Baltimore Museum of Industry, ever got up on this web forum............. Release Date: July 11, 2006 100 Year Anniversary with a Makeover BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – With a grant from Maryland Historical Trust, Steam Tug Baltimore will undergo emergency hull painting at General Ship Repair’s dry dock. Painting will commence July 3, 2006. Ameron Paints, Smith Marine Towing, and General Ship Repair are all making donations towards this effort. It was 100 years ago that Baltimore, official number 203700 set sail. Until 1963 Baltimore carried city officials, prospective investors, and visitors; made waterfront inspections; shuttled pile drivers and barges; and on occasion broke ice with a portable breaker affixed to her bow. Baltimore sank in 1979, was donated to the Baltimore Museum of Industry (BMI) and subsequently raised in 1981. She is now the only operating, hand-fired, coal-burning tug in North America. Baltimore is currently operated by the BMI and the Baltimore and Chesapeake Steamboat Company (BCSC) whose mission is to maintain the steam tug Baltimore and operate it as an educational museum highlighting the tug's unique place in American history. The Company intends to make Baltimore a nation-wide focal recognition artifact for teaching industrial history. |
