Subject: Steam Launches Ply'd Baltimore Waters |
![]() As the reports of the great Baltimore Tugboat Parade of October 21st are still filtering in, I thought some of you would like to know that a number of vertical boiler'd steam launches were spotted in Canton near the mouth of the inner harbour and across from Fort McHenry rendering whistle salutes to one of two remaining WWII liberty ships in existance, the SS JOHN W. BROWN. Steam whistles could be heard off of the BROWN'S starboard side, a sound (and perhaps the very sights) not known since the ship may have visited the islands herself. Question is: Were any trinkets and coconuts offered up to the crew on deck in return for the Yankee Dollar? To be sure, it was a great weekend for those paying their respects to the 1906 birthday girl Steam Tug BALTIMORE and the Port of Baltimore's 300th anniversary observance too. The harbour was filled with vessels of all description including stern and sidewheelers. The procession to Harbour Place was undertaken by 28 tugboats and those in convoy were offered cannon salutes by other historic vessels upon reaching the Inner Harbour Basin. Walt |
