I've recently heard from Blacksmith Mark Ruhl that there will be a riveting demonstration this Fall that will include the setting of flush and button head rivets into side plates during the Steam Tug BALTIMORE'S 100th birthday party this coming October 21st and 22nd. We would think that now would be a good time to set about seeking out the former Federal Hill shipyard workers and ask if they would like to participate in the demos or stand by to offer spectators a glimpse of what it must have been like to place new or change out the thousands of fasteners so vital to the integrity of a vessel's water tight seams. Been there? Done that? Share it please.... we want to know of your experiences and what it must have been like in the day of the red-hot riveters. Don't be shy... it's time to make us all wiser and appreciative of your craft. Walt |
