Kent County Public Schools was recently awarded a three-year $950,000 "Teaching American History" grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant supports a new professional development program for American history teachers in seven Maryland counties: Kent, Calvert, Caroline, Dorchester, Queen Anne's, St. Mary's and Talbot. Four groups – led by Sultana Projects (Chestertown) – worked with the Kent school system to develop the program, which is called Roots of a Nation – A Chesapeake Journey. In addition to Sultana, the coalition included two organizations at Washington College (Chestertown) in Kent County and the Calvert Marine Museum (Solomons) in Calvert County. Sultana Projects is an educational organization that uses the schooner Sultana as a classroom. Using the Chesapeake Bay as a unifying theme, Roots of a Nation addresses four periods in U.S. history: Native Americans and European settlement; Revolutionary War; War of 1812; and slavery and the Civil War. Calvert Marine Museum will tie in to the upcoming War of 1812 bicentennial by offering four courses annually over the three-year period – all linked to the war. The museum also plans to host a major War of 1812 conference in November 2011. |
