The Celebrity Cruise Line recently announced that it is to be cancelling its 2011-2012 winter sailings from Baltimore. It's passenger liner the CELEBRITY CENTURY will instead head for Australia, French Polynesia, Indonesia and New Zealand. Being cut are the 12-night Caribbean cruises originally planned from Baltimore. Celebrity earlier had announced its winter offerings from the Port of Baltimore, so all is not lost. Richard Scher, spokesman for the Maryland Port Administration, indicated that the cruise line's departure is part of the natural ebb and flow that results from ship positioning, and added that while the Caribbean is a desirable market for cruise lines, Celebrity saw a gap in its global coverage and wanted to shore up those interests . Mr. Scher points out that even with the canceled sailings, Baltimore will still be seeing up to 112 cruises in 2011, a figure raised from 91 in 2010. Richard Scher also pointed out that the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore continues to aggressively pursue a replacement schedule for the winter 2011 and has received positive feedback from more than one cruise line. "We like to attract cruise lines that do give the traveling public a diverse schedule of cruises, from your 5-day all the way up to the 12-day [cruises]," MPA spokesman Scher offered hope with adding, "There's a strong market in this area for extended cruises." We hope he's correct. |
