Maritime Republic of Eastport’s Annual TUG of War Nov 14, 2009 The Slaughter across the Water is the longest tug-of-war over a body of water in the world. It takes place across the Annapolis Harbor (otherwise known as the Gulf of Eastport). The war between the Maritime Republic of Eastport (MRE) and Downtown Annapolis features a 1700-foot rope, 450 tuggers, and more than 1,000 spectators. Festivities begin at 11:00 a.m. when downtown Eastport and Annapolis are transformed into a festival-like atmosphere. Tugging begins at the Crack o' Noon. It draws on the rivalry between Eastport and the City of Annapolis. Over the past ten years, the MRE has raised more than $190,000 for charitable organizations through this event. |
