Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, a 2003 film directed by Peter Weir, is Film Festival of the Sea, is slated to come into view at Annapolis City Dock this coming Wednesday (September 9, 2009). Screening at 8:00 p.m. and what could be better -- FREE Admission! Bring a chair! Bring a belaying pin. If you can't find one of those bring a kitchen rolling pin. The Courage To Do The Impossible Lies In The Hearts of Men. The plot: During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America. When Capt. Jack Aubrey, played by Russell Crowe, and his crew disguise their ship to lure in the French frigate "Acheron", the name of the “Surprize” is changed to "Syren", a play on the word "Siren", a sea nymph from Greek mythology, who lured sailors to their doom The combination of action and introspection in "Master and Commander" at times seems like an odd mix, but the film succeeds on both levels and therefore definitely a voyage worth taking into Annapolis Harbor. This free screening is sponsored jointly by the City of Annapolis and the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Carry On! |
