Beatlemania had certainly hit America during that timeframe, with four Beatles songs ranked #1 - #4 in the Cash Box charts. And I remember Dick Clark saying on one of his syndicated radio shows that the Beatles had a monopoly on the Billboard charts at that time as well. But I'm thinking that Beatlemania may have hit at an apex a couple weeks later, on April 4, 1964 -- as the top five tunes on the charts were Beatles songs; "Twist and Shout," "Can't Buy Me Love," "She Loves You," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and "Please, Please Me." And these five songs were recorded on four different labels. Looking further down the charts, at #28 was the Beatles tune, "Do You Want to Know a Secret," and at #41 was "From Me to You." "All My Loving," is listed at #61, while "Love Me Do," was moving up the charts at #77. "Thank You Girl," is listed at #86, while "You Can't Do That," just made it on the charts at #97. In fact, the Beatles were so hot back then that there were a couple songs on the charts performed by other musicians that were about the Beatles! At #37, the Carefrees had a song called "We Love You Beatles," in their tribute song to the Fab Four. While at #91, the Four Preps had a song called "A Letter to the Beatles," which just made it onto the charts. I seriously doubt that you'll ever see a group that had a monopoly on the charts like the Beatles did at that time! |
