Bob, I agree with you 100% that the King's take on "My Boy" is very well done. I remember the '71 Richard Harris original and it pales by comparison. I particularly like Elvis' cracked, anguished, almost howling falsetto toward the end.

Elvis' approach to recording and performing was always professional from the beginning, but additionally during the 1970s Elvis did quite a few songs about family breakup and its sad, tragic results. Besides My Boy, Don't Cry Daddy and Separate Ways are the first ones that come to mind. After listening closely to the lyrics of these songs and hearing him spill the bottom of his gut expressing them you couldn't possibly draw any other conclusion but that he was never the same after his marriage to Priscilla crashed, and I think it was the main reason for his physical deterioration in the latter stage of his career. His private misery flows abundantly from these classic recordings of that time.
