John, First of all, great question. Never gave it much thought. My initial answer is that Soul went mainstream and evolved into a number of other sub-genres in the 70's including Funk, Disco and The Philly Sound. Remember, Soul music reflected the civil rights anthems and protests of the early to mid 60's. After 1968 (the riots, MLK and RFK dying, and anti-war protests taking center stage), mentalities shifted to different forms of protest for the rest of the decade and quite frankly by the beginning of the 70's, everybody was burned out from the fighting and wanted to just kick back. That's when the Impressions gave way to the Stylistics and James Brown passed the baton to Barry White while Aretha begat Donna Summer and Natalie Cole. So to speak. I'm intending to post a new countdown from 1980 in the next few days. Keep posting on the forum. I enjoy your comments and Happy New Year, pal! |
