It's seen it's better days, but it is still active. Even Disney broadcasts on it (and FM). It's sad that AM Stereo Radio never caught on, but too many struggling to gain their controlled transmission format. While not great for music quality, it's still great for voice. It's probably the greatest propagating type transmission available. Though, being most noise in nature is Amplitude Modulated, it, such as lightning, causes interference with radio transmissions. It's sort of fun to hear stations well across the country, even outside it (Canada), on my car radio. However, station have to be careful as over modulating the radio carrier can cause spurious transmissions, causing interference with other radio stations and electrical devices, while widening the bandwidth. For example, on WIFI-AM, 1460 kHz, armatures will over-modulate (distorted audio, too), possibly causing citation(s) from the FCC, unless limiters are in place. But, all in all, AM is still the choice to capture many listeners, with the least amount of power. It was once the only means for public safety announcements, two dedicated frequencies. But, today, who knows where to turn for such important broadcasts. Good luck! Best, |
