I know exactly what you mean - but there are fewer and fewer people to share it with.

Forexample, I have always had a soft spot for a song called "Angel On My Shoulder" by The Cascades, but never came across the original by the writer of the tune Shelby Flint, although I recall hearing her version once or twice on AFN in Europe.

Last week, which rummaging through some old vinyl that a local Charity Shop was getting rid of, there it was - the original single, on Valiant Records!

How it got to Ireland, I have no idea, as the Charity Shop could not recall who originally brought the records into them, but looking at the collection, it might well have been handed in by the family of an Irish emigrant who returned from the USA, as there were about forty singles, all on American labels, and all between 1957 and 1961 or thereabouts.

Shelby Flint's version is dated 1960 (I thought it might be newer as the Cascades version came out around 1964 and I always presumed that theirs was a cover version. Obviously it was a revival).

The record is Valiant 6001 - and I wonder if by any chance that 6001 was the first single released by the label? Given that this came out in 1960, and the label was probably founded around then, this could be the first.

Otherwise they started at 5001 and this is the hundred and first!

I now have 19 45rpm singles now on Valiant, mainly by the Cascades (6), the Association (5), or by the owner of the label, Barry DeVorzon who recorded under the name Barry & The Tamerlanes (5) plus one each by other acts.

Anyway, a piece of history - of interest to nobody else except me (and possibly Shelby Flint!).

Sometimes, when you find that elusive record that you heard years back on radio, it is not quite as good as your memory tells you it was - but this is actually better than I remember it!

It is moments like this that make it all worthwhile!
