Chi Coltrane Session Tapes Missing? Years ago, Bob Irwin, of Sundazed (Records) searched the vaults of Columbia/Sony to bring us something new and exciting of past music. In a past CD booklet, he mentioned the session tapes of Chi Coltrane were missing or never acquired, all he found were mixed-down master tapes. Maybe Chi holds/owns her session tapes, like other artists do. You can enhance the sound of master tapes, but to create true (stereo) remastering, you need the session tapes. By accident, I ran across an import CD (Compact Disc) of Chi's, but was unsure it contained "original" song versions. I saw a Michael Drive did the remastering. A quick internet search brought me to, music artist/producer, Michael Drive's (AKA D.R.I.V.E.) web site. While Michael may not have been paid to remaster Chi's songs, he did so becuase admiration of her and his kindness. That, in itself, is great! I can't say what was used to remaster (I have yet reviewed the CD booklet in binary or paper form), but looking at the waveform, its superior in sound that has been previously published. Michael tells me Chi's initial US album was recorded at Columbia's Studio, in LA, now closed. Here's "Thunder And Lightning" (1972). Chi's still active and gaining popularity, attracting large crowds, in the 50-100 thousand range, in other parts of the world... John
