As I grow older, my ears tend to favor acoustic guitar work, more than electric.

As far as my good guess, judging by sound quality, that's where I fit Gilbert, as one who owns his recordings, as various other US artists that can be found in some unusual form, marketed in Japan. Strange, but true. Unlike the BIG record companies who drain your wallet dry, offering a multitude of never ending "remastered" CDs, the other artists who own their material, provide the best sound, upfront.

Anyway, via Bear Family, I received a response, from Howard, to my Take # error report, about Johnny Tillotson. later, I'll pot a snippet of "Without You" Take #10, and you (and others) can tell me your reaction. Some recordings will remain mysteries what actually happened, logs/documents may be in error, and why a later Take sounds nothing like the hit! Sadly, the key people who knew what happened are now gone and I don't expect artists to remember a heck of a lot that happened 50+ years ago.
