John wrote... It was just strange to find Ace and Big Beat records, in the UK, issuing Sniff 'N' The Tears, on CD! Jim replied.... Well that makes some sort of sense because the Sniff 'N' The Tears single I have is on Chiswick Records, and Ace have recently put out a compilation of Chiswick singles, so perhaps they are doing the entire catalogue? Chiswick were a bit beyond my era (not to mention my comfort zone) I'm afraid, and they had some weird punk and semi-punk and metal acts onboard, including The Count Bishops, The Damned, and Motorhead - yet at the same time tbey recorded and released material by at least two US acts who did not have labels in the States, namely Dean Friedman and Link Wray. I only really remember the label for Dean Friedman (one of the few things I liked from the 70's were the singer-songwriters), and Rocky Sharpe & The Replays - a sort of UK Sha-Na-Na who did creditable versions of things like "Shout Shout Knock Yourself Out" (the old Ernie Maresca hit) and other revivals. They were only OK on record, but they were really great live. Have no idea if they are still working the circuit but they were good. And that was Chiswick! |
