| The song was written by Donald Storball who himself played guitar in the Three Caps (they later became the Capitols). They did not have a bass player initially, and so his plea to pianist Richard McDougall to ""Give me a bit of bass with those 88s". The term 88s is as you yourself said, a common one for a piano.
