Sorry John for using the "oldies" term! The term itself does not seem to have been used as a radio station format description until the mid-sixties, and the first usage as a appears to have been by Art Laboe on KRLA It seemingly stemmed from his series of "Oldies But Goodies" albums on Original Sounds, and he said he had picked the series title from the 1961 hit by Little Caesar & The Romans "Those Oldies But Goodies". I never worry too much about the phrase because it is all comparative. I was listening to a station in London a few weeks back, where the DJ announced that he was going to play a real oldie, adding that he was "going back - and I mean going back - way back - all the way back - to 1997!" - and at point, I did feel (sligthly) old. But the feeling didn't last! Or as a friend told me recently.... There was a time when your mom would send you down to the local store with just one dollar, and you would come back with a chicken, two loaves of bread, a slab of cheese, a dozen eggs and a quart of milk. Couldn't do that today though - not with all those security cameras! And while I'm on, President Obama was in Ireland today - in fact in a small town about forty miles from where I live. It's a small world!
