Over here, AM Radio broadcast in perfect Quadrophonic - so it took two people and four ears to hear the song properly!:-)

As regards the way black people were treated -I guess things were different way back then.

We have progressed!

You know the old story about how Jay & The Americans got hold of "Only In America"?

The writers had penned it for The Drifters, who recorded it, but when their label heard the lyrics,

"Only in America,
Could a poor boy grow up to be President" -

the execs said "no way - nobody would believe those words being sung by a black group".

So they sold the backing track to Leiber & Stoller, who put Jay & The Americans over it!

Noe you do indeed have a black President, so the Drifters were only 40 years ahead of their time!

Heard the Drifters version for the first time only last year. It was worth the wait.
