Yes, the Grassroots started out as studio musicians. Their first hit in 1966, Where Where You When I Needed You, was cut by studio musicians. When it became a hit, they needed a group to hit the road to promote it. Thus, the Grassroots were born. Rob Grill, as mentioned, was an original member. He did not sing lead on all of their hits, but has since the reincarnation of the group back in the early 1980's. An interesting side note, Creed Bratton, who who played lead guitar in the band, plays an off and on character on the hit show, The Office.
