Way back then, we all sort of sneered at Pat Boone for the remakes as we were cool and preferred Little Richard and Fats Domino, whereas he was so not cool and probably preferred Perry Como and Andy Williams, but I soon realised that like Elvis, he had little choice in what he recorded and had to do what he was told. And he did make some great records - and he had a great voice. And he was going places credibility-wise with songs like "Moody River" and "Big Cold Wind". But I remember that immediately after these, Dot issued four clangers - Johnny Will - I'll See You In My Dreams - Quando Quando Quando and Speedy Gonzales, and after those, he could not get himeself arrested. They all sold in varying quantities, but they damaged his credibility with DJs, and that was it. Still a great voice! Thanks for the "grand entrance" remark - actually I was away from Ireland, and due to some sort of glitch, although I could read the site, I could not get this reply button to work. Some bug on my laptop I think. I know you do not much like the show, but I saw "Jersey Girls" in London, for the third, and I presume, final time, although it still sells out each night. I still think it is the best rock musical ever - far better than "Hair" or "Grease" or "Fame". Liked also the Sam Cooke track you dug up. |
