Let's take what I collect, everything unusual/uncommon in the Top 40 category. If some DJ had what I have, back, say about very early '70's, when FM Stereo became popular and this R&R music was fresher in most minds, that DJ would have become very popular - gaining many listeners.

But since decade after decade has passed, it's value to listeners is much less appealing, what fans are still alive!

Same with money. If I hang on to a dollar, it's value is a lot less than if I had spent it a half century ago.
Strange analogy, eh? :-)
