Message Detail:
Have that Rhino CD, Jim. Feel they didn't have access to session tapes; maybe just copied/enhanced from the CD I have. This Stereo rendition (below) of Lonely Boy paints a pretty picture that Paul's earliest ABC-Paramount recordings may be available in something other than typical monophonic. Who has what and where it is remains a mystery. Maybe Paul Anka does possess the ABC "masters", but not the session tapes that is needed to render stereo, With what Rhino issued of The Kinks, superior sounding stereo mixes exist than what they offered. On Rhino's early LPs, featuring Federal Records, that featured Hank Ballard in very primitive stereo, only to be superseded by others as more of Hank's staged session tapes were discovered. Who knows, maybe Paul's ABC-Paramount session tapes are sitting, collecting dust, in someone's basement!!!

I tired of Rhino when I saw how they flooded the market with their CDs. Too fast to be doing any decent research, even avoiding paying fees to gain access to tape, so they "ripped" 45s to save cost. Their goal wasn't to publish great sound, but acceptable. Had to laugh when I found them targeting the toddler's market. Their compilations put me to sleep. too.

I think Richard Foos was president of Rhino before Warner intruded, causing some employees to leave, because it was no longer fun anymore. Warner demanded results on their investment, however possible! Richard Foos' Shout Factory isn't much better than Rhino, with inferior sound quality, hiring anyone who can load a tape on a tape recorder to master for them. Maybe one day I'll buy up all these California based reissue companies and turn them into burger shops. They seem to migrate in California for unknown reasons.

Leave it to me, Jim, I'll teach you more about stereo (and reissue companies) than you never cared to know! :-)

Best,
John
p.s. After I had the idea Paul may own his tapes, I bought a 3 CD set, I believe, produced by him. Again, a big dissapointment.
